This is classic Greg Iles territory, where the South’s past and present lie eternally entangled where the sins of the father pass from generation to generation and where a murder from yesteryear finds new life-and victims-in the present. The first in a two-part series, a new Penn Cage thriller set in the South-from the New York Times bestselling author “who puts the horror in a believable context” ( The Washington Post) and “who just keeps getting better” ( Booklist).įeaturing the return of popular hero Penn Cage ( Devil’s Punchbowl, Turning Angel, The Quiet Game), this suspenseful tale set in the deep south is filled with long-held secrets and unresolved mysteries and, perhaps most worrisome of all, a serious threat to the well-being of Tom Cage, Penn’s father, the respected doctor who is the moral center of the Penn Cage books. ![]() ![]() Nobody uses somebody else’s resources as carefully as he uses his own. On shortages: “We economists don’t know much, but we do know how to create a shortage. Clearly it is not a sufficient condition.” The conditions for freedom: “History only suggests that capitalism is a necessary condition for political freedom. In honor of his birthday, here are six quotes by Friedman on freedom and economics: Even the uber-liberal Paul Krugman, admits that Friedman was “One of the most important economic thinkers of all time…” Friedman’s writings are often so clear and straightforward (unusual for modern economists) that when reading him you often find yourself wondering how anyone could disagree. ![]() Similarly, Milton Friedman, who would have been 103 years old today, could be described as the economist of common sense. I mean the premise of the story is that she might have been privy to her father's dealings/plans that's why they took her. Which would be weird because it sounded like she had been involved in or at least been exposed to the mafia activities since she was a kid. I wonder if this was intentional or other females in everyone's lives were that inconsequential. Did anyone else realise that the only female character in both book 1 and 2 is the heroine? The syndicate had a party to celebrate some successful deal, still it was like she was the only woman there. ![]() ![]() ![]() Kingfisher uses the bones of fairy tale to create something entirely her own.”-Emily Tesh, author of Silver in the Wood ![]() “ A modern classic.”-Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling author of Every Heart A Doorway this rollicking feminist fairy tale is filled with redemption, community and courage, its dark passages the road to a satisfyingly uplifting endgame."-Shelf Awareness, starred review ![]() “The kind of book that immediately feels like an old friend.”-Melissa Caruso, author of The Tethered Mage But, as is the way in stories of princes and the impossible, these tasks are only the beginning of Marra’s strange and enchanting journey to save her sister and topple a throne. If Marra can complete three impossible tasks, a witch will grant her the tools she needs. But after years of watching their families and kingdoms pretend all is well, Marra realizes if any hero is coming, it will have to be Marra herself. From the safety of the convent, Marra wonders who will come to her sister’s rescue and put a stop to this. Her older sister wasn’t so fortunate though, and her royal husband is as abusive as he is powerful. Marra - a shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter - is relieved not to be married off for the sake of her parents’ throne. This constant analyzing is what makes Blood Gravity so powerful. Though the narrator doesn't try to justify the way his father has treated him, he does explore the logic his father has used to justify the behavior. What would seem like a simple black/white, right/wrong relationship isn't so simple through the eyes of the victim. The emotional complication arises as the reader learns more about the narrator's confusing history with his father. He assumes that this sexual abuse will continue with his little brother, 5-year old Ben. ![]() A college student has lived his entire life being sexually abused by his father. The story here is simple plot-wise though is rather emotionally complex. This is important because Blood Gravity sucks you in, tests your moral limitations, breaks your heart, and then.leaves you.
